Several Simple Steps To Making Ethanol At Home.

By: Malc Baxter

With drivers feeling the pressure because of the rising costs of gasoline, there is hope by creating ethanol fuel on your own at home. If you have ever tried to make your own beer or wine, making ethanol should not be to difficult since you can ferment any starchy or sugary food or even waste product into a mush that can be distilled to produce 190 proof alcohol.

This ethanol could be used in your car, and there may be no modifications necessary, because the car is already E85 ethanol compatable.

Using dry corn or sugar in sufficient quantities.

The first ingredient ethanol makers use is either dry corn, which is widely available, or even sugar cane, however, buying the right amount is important.

The corn will need to be ground and it may require a grain mill for this purpose and one should then add water and cook it at temperatures that will allow for liquefaction and add enzymes which will allow the starch in the corn to be converted into sugar. In making ethanol, both mashing and fermenting need to be done.

When making ethanol, you should make sure that all water content is removed by using a molecular sieve. A molecular sieve is a very fine form of strainer that will ensure a better end product.

A product called Zeolyte can also by used, this is a granulated product that works by soaking up the water leaving the longer ethanol molecules alone. To remove the water from the Zeolyte one may broil it on a backyard grill or dry it out in the sun. You can also employ a hydrometer to ensure that the ethanol is 200 proof, and any remaining water will fall to the base when it is mixed with gasoline.

Two to Five percent of alcohol is a Federal regulation in making ethanol; however the alcohol needs to be denatured before adding gasoline in order to obtain E85. It is important to verify that a vehicle is compatible with ethanol before utilizing the E85.

Following these few simple steps should ensure that you have the ability to begin making your own ethanol, and thus become fuel independent.
